Glen Dimplex and SSE present the potential for Smart Electric Thermal Storage.
On the 26th February 2013, Glen Dimplex and SSE held a lunch event on the enormous potential of Smart Electric Thermal Storage in a European context. The event took place in the European Parliament Building in Brussels.
Smart Electric Thermal Storage enables the storage of heat from renewable electricity generated at times when supply is high, but demand is low. It is based on the principles of the traditional night storage heaters, but optimised through innovations in smart heating technologies.
A report, prepared by Dutch consultancy DNV KEMA Energy & Sustainability for Glen Dimplex and SSE, entitled Potential for Smart Electric Thermal Storage -Contributing to a low carbon energy system was presented at the event with contributions from Philip Lowe (Director-General of DG Energy), Sean O’Driscoll (CEO of Glen Dimplex) and Ian Marchant (CEO of SSE). The report looked at the potential impact of the new smart electric thermal storage (SETS) technology, Quantum, brought to market by SSE and Glen Dimplex, on the energy system as a whole and also on the consumer.
The event attracted around 100 people, including representatives from the European Commission, the European Parliament, Eurelectric, EASE, EDF, Scottish Power and E.ON Energy.
The event was a resounding success and has raised the profile of the potential for Smart Electric Thermal Storage in a European context.
